Durch einen Unfall bei einer Ölbohrung nahe der Küste kann sich ein gigantischer prähistorischer Riesenhai befreien und frisst sich hungrig durch die schwimmenden Badegäste des nahegelegenen Strandes. Die hübsche Marine Biologin Kat Carmichael reist sofort an den Tatort. Doch Ölmagnat Roger Wade stellt sich ihr in den Weg um seine nicht ganz sauberen Geschäfte zu schützen. Der Hai ist mittlwerweile mutiert und kann nun sogar auf Land sich fortbewegen. Mit der Hilfe des Disc Jockeys Dynamite Stevens trotzt Kat dem zwielichten Wade und muss einen Weg finden um das Monster zu besiegen.
