Das Ende von „Sonic the Hedgedog 2“ und dessen Post-Credit-Szene verraten, welcher der kommende Antagonist sein könnte: Shadow. Der schwarze Igel Shadow, der Sonic zum Verwechseln ähnlich sieht, ist getrieben von Wut und Rache. Und obwohl Sonic glaubt ihm wie bei seinem Freund Knuckles mit der Kraft der Freundschaft helfen zu können, wird dieser Weg diesmal nicht funktionieren. Außerdem gibt es Hinweise auf das Gen-Experiment „Projekt Shadow“, woraus Shadow erschaffen wurde, sowie auf die Militärorganisation G.U.N. Der Hauptfeind von Sonic in den bisherigen Filmen war Dr. Robotnik, dessen Schauspieler Jim Carrey aber vor Kurzem seinen Ruhestand bekannt gegeben hat. Ob dieser für Teil 3 zurückkehrt, ist also mehr als fraglich, weshalb Shadow für die Fortsetzung umso wichtiger werden könnte.
