Als eine Verletzung seine Karriere als Amateurboxer beendet, zieht Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg) nach L.A. und träumt vom Ruhm. Während er sich als Supermarktangestellter durchschlägt, lernt er Carmen (Teresa Ruiz) kennen, eine katholische Sonntagsschullehrerin, die gegen seinen Bad-Boy-Charme immun zu sein scheint. Entschlossen, sie für sich zu gewinnen, beginnt der langjährige Agnostiker in die Kirche zu gehen, um sie zu beeindrucken. Doch als er einen schrecklichen Motorradunfall überlebt, fragt er sich, ob er seine zweite Chance nutzen kann, um anderen zu helfen, ihren Weg zu finden, was zu der überraschenden Erkenntnis führt, dass er dazu bestimmt ist, katholischer Priester zu werden. Trotz einer verheerenden Gesundheitskrise und der Skepsis von Kirchenvertretern und seinen entfremdeten Eltern (Mel Gibson und Jacki Weaver) verfolgt Stu seine Berufung mit Mut und Mitgefühl und inspiriert damit nicht nur die Menschen, die ihm am nächsten stehen, sondern auch unzählige andere.
